What Is Sound Engineering?

“Sound Engineering”, as the term suggests it is a type of study that focuses on sound and building up on the sounds. It is a technical study of sound mostly about its characteristics and nature. Using this as the base, like any engineer uses nuts and bolts as a base, they generate, manipulate, specify or acquire various audio elements. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including filmmaking, television production, theatre, sound recording and reproduction, live performance, sound art, post-production, and video game software development.

Sound Engineer and His Responsibilities

Sound Engineer, also called Audio Engineer, is solely responsible for all the technical aspects of audio in a film, series, short videos, commercials, documentaries etc. He has a job role of operating, maintaining or repairing sound recording systems and taking care of its setup and maintenance. They generally work with Music operators, directors, editors, etc. The sound crew are responsible for all recorded sound on set (and for minimising any unwanted sound) and operate a variety of microphones and playback equipment. A vital part of understanding and realising the director’s creative vision for the atmosphere of a film, good sound recording can save production time and money in post-production. The sound crew is headed by a production sound mixer, who oversees boom operators, sound assistants and trainees.
